Author: Reihan Salam
Date: 2008
Topic: The era of male dominance in the employment and the economic finance is decreasing and male are becoming unemployed while women are being employed.

Analysis of Argument:

Exigence: Salam discusses how the suggestion of macho men is being faded out in today's society with unemployed men. Because of this, Salam believes there is two choices that could be made, adaption or confront today's society.

Intended Audience: Anyone who is involved in finance.

Purpose: To show how males on families are being changed in today's society.

Claim(s): "The era of male dominance is becoming to an end. For years, the world has been witnessing a quiet but monumental shift of power from men to women (629)."

Main Evidence: In the article, Salam explains how macho men are being unemployed more in today's society than before. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80 percent of job losses in the United States had unemployed men since November . Europe also has the same economy percentage of unemployed men in today's society, but Europe is about 7 million more of unemployed men before the recession. Putting these two countries together, the total of unemployed macho men are 28 million out of worldwide. This means that men are being replaced by women in today's society for work.

Rhetorical Analysis:

Writer's Strategy 1: (Ethos) The author uses strong fact and terms to help the reader understand the author's point of view towards this subject.

Writer's Strategy 2: (Logos) Salam points out on the article that the role of men from today's society had changed after the recession. Women stopped being housewives and began to be involved in work.

Writer's Strategy 3: (Pathos) Salam uses powerful language on the article, but it shows the reader a little  emotion towards this text.

Reader Effect #1: The author’s attitude made the reader accept as true what the author was talking about and made the reader view the author’s point of view toward this issue.

Reader Effect #2: The author’s powerful facts helped to reader comprehend the text of the macho men crisis.

Reader Effect #3: The author did not use a lot of emotional connection to the reader in this article, but the facts that the author gave were enough for the reader to understand.

Response: I agree with Reihan Salam because in today's society there is more female in work than men. Although the global of economic of macho men is coming to an end, men can still work on their desirable career. Therefore, I agree with Salam due to the loss of macho men in today’s society.

Reader Response #2

In the article," Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt": Advertising and Violence, by Jean Kilbourne talks about how women are being compared to products on advertising ads to show how the "perfect and attractive girl" for a man should look like. Each advertising ad explains what it means. Some advertising ads show that women are good for only one thing, sex and the other show violence towards women. Also how woman are consider a man's b**Ch.  One example, a picture of an ad on the article shows a woman with her hair being pulled by a handsome man.
Each advertising ad can mean a lot of things. An example is the jean advertisement saying "Wear it out and make it scream," with a man sliding his hands under a women's transparent shirt. It could mean seduction or could be an easy attack towards women. Advertisements are made every day. Most to get our attention on products, but they don’t think that advertising ads for women can us in so many ways.
According to Antonia Novello, the images we see on advertisement ads become numbed to us, just as we become numbed to daily news of women being raped, battered and killed. Most women are killed by the hands of their husband or boyfriend. This means that advertisements of this kind are the cause of men mistreating women and not valuing them for who they are.
These advertisements are a goal to being a success to the people who make these advertisements. They gain money from each product is sold by the company, but what these people don’t realize what matters the most is to value and respect woman for who they are and how they look like. Advertisements like these do not bring respect towards anyone.

Final Polish: PROPOSITION 30

The community we live in is already on poverty-stricken. The state is losing money every day that goes by on education, health and public safety. The government had spent billions of dollars for the past years on budget cuts. Government Jerry Brown decided to come up with a proposition that sales and tax increase could help the state avoid budget cuts, provide education to students and public safety. He came up with proposition 30. Proposition 30 will increase personal income tax on earning over $250,000 for seven years and sales taxes by ¼ cent for four years. This means every $4 that you spend for a hamburger it will go to the schools and to the public safety fund. From the income tax, 89 % will go to K-12 schools and 11 % to community colleges to provide students with a good education. Proposition 30 will also fund public safety services from the state to local governments. It will raise six billion dollars in additional annual state revenues from years of 2012- ’13, with smaller amounts for education and the local public. Such as, hospitals, prisons, and fire departments. Proposition 30 will help pay down any of the state's dept by building up years of gimmicks and borrowing while preventing cuts towards schools, public safety, and critical services for seniors, families, and small business. It will not only help with the dept but it will also help California save billions in future prison costs. With proposition 30, our state could go back on its feet and no budget cuts would be done.
If not approved, schools will face an additional 6 billion dollars in budget cuts. There would be larger classes, more teachers would get laid-off, tuition would rise and there would be shorter school year. It may also lead to schools being shut down. College students will have to face additional $150 tuition for spring. You would have to pay sales taxes on every purchase buy online. Prisons wont have classes for the prisoners if there is not enough money on the fund for prison. Prisons would have limited space and prisoners would have to be in parole. More police officers and security officers would also get laid off.
Proposition 30 is a good opportunity to have in order to cover our state from budget cuts on public schools, community colleges and universities. It would help students with their school materials and class courses. I am a current college student and it is my third semester here. I have been receiving financial help for the past year. I had to use my own money from my own pocket to buy my books this semester due to financial issues. It was hard because text books are very expensive to buy. In fact, my mother had also experienced college before. She would go to college and work at the same time, but every paycheck she would get; it would go to the rent, and other bills. The money she had left over was not enough to pay for her classes. My mother did not qualify for financial aid back then. It was her first semester at a community college, in half of the semester, she dropped out of college.
What does the American Dream mean to me? To me it means that you have the opportunity to go to school and gain good education in order to make something good of yourself. This means proposition 30 should go through because it will affect me as well as other students that want to follow their dreams. My dream is to be a criminal detective to help people find their missing loved ones, find out who killed the victim of a crime case, find the killer and put him or her behind bars. If prop 30 does not pass it, I would have to pay for my education due to any budget cuts being made and there will not be enough money to buy my books and pay my classes. I would be tight on money especially when I and my family are low income. My parents dont make enough money for them to be paying for my education. It wont make any difference if I work or not because even though Im working, I still make about 300-400 dollars a month. Mostly everything I get from every pay check goes to bills. There will not be any jobs opened for this job due to tight money funds and budget cuts if it does not pass. It will affect me because I would be in risk of being laid-off or I would not be hired due to limited detectives for this career. It will also affect other students who want to keep going to school after graduating from high school. They will know that it would be hard to go to a college or university, even though they applied for scholarships and werent approved from their hard work. Students will eventually stop going to school due to short money for paying expenses for school, for not receiving full scholarships, or financial aid.
Proposition 30 should go through in order to make the community better. Schools would have more money and more teachers in order to help students succeed in their class subjects. More college students would graduate and follow their dreams. Also the state would balance on every spending made by the government. There would be more jobs for unemployed people. It would help us as much as our community if there is money on every fund for students education, our health and the safety of the public. Therefore, proposition 30 should go through the initiative process of the state’s constitution.

Rough Draft

The world we live in is not the same as it used to be a few years ago. The state is getting broke each and every day that comes by. The government spent billions of dollars last year on school, prison and public safety budget cuts. With proposition 30, our state could be back on it's  feet and no budget cuts would be done.
Proposition 30 is a good opportunity to have in order to cover us from budget cuts on public schools, community colleges and universities. It would help students with their school materials and class courses. I am a current college student and it is my third semester here. I have been receiving financial help for the past year. I had to use my own money from my own pocket to buy my books this semester due to some financial issues. It was hard because text books are very expensive to buy. As part of doing my homework, about proposition 30, there were good pros that will happen if proposition 30 goes through. Students who were not able to afford to go to college before or who are not able to go, will be able to afford to go to college now without warring about how much you have to pay for school. If it does not go through, it will affect me same as with other students who are receiving financial help from the government. As being part of this community, I say prop 30 should pass.
It would be hard paying for college by yourself if proposition 30 does not pass. My mother had experienced college before. She would go to college and work at the same time, but every paycheck she would get, it would go to the rent, and other bills. The money she had left over was not enough to pay for her classes. My mother did not qualify for financial aid back then. It was her first semester at a community college, in half of the semester, she dropped out of school.
Proposition 30 will give 41.3 % of the income taxes to K-12 and higher education such as UC, CSU, and Community colleges will be given 10.1% to provide students with a good education. It will increase the sales tax and use revenue for four years. Proposition 30 will also fund public safety services from the state to local governments. It will raise about six billion dollars in additional annual state revenues from the years of 2012 -'13 through 2016- '17, with smaller amounts for education and the local public. Such as, the hospitals, prisons , and fire departments.
If proposition 30 does not pass, schools will lose money and eventually schools will be closed. You will have to pay taxes when buying online. It will affect college students because they would have to may more school fees. If proposition 30 does not go through, there would not be enough money on the fund for prisons. Prisoners won't have any classes were they can gain education. Also prisons would have limited space and prisoners would have to be on parole.

Intended Audience: General Public
Purpose: To inform California about Prop 30

Ethos: I am a current college student. This is my third semester here and I have been receiving financial help. If Prop 30 does not pass, it will affect me same as with other students who are receiving help from the government. Class courses are very expensive to pay including text books. As in doing my homework about researching about Prop 30, there were good pros that will happen if Prop 30 goes through to the system. Students who were not able to afford to college before or who are not able to go, will be able to afford to go to college now without warring about how much you have to pay for school. Being a college student, I say Yes to prop 30.

Pathos: My mother experienced college before. She would go to college and work at the same time, but the money she would get from working, was not enough to pay for her classes. My mother did not qualify for financial back then. It was her first semester at a community college, in half of the semester, She dropped out of college.

Logos: Proposition 30 will increase the personal income tax on annual earnings over 4250,00 for about seven years. Also will increase the sales and use tax revenue for four years. Prop 30 will fund public safety services from the state to local governments.
